Introduction - Know these terms
first.
1.
The Internet (互联网)
The Internet ( or
the Net) is a network that
connects computers around the world.

2. WWW
(万维网)
WWW, the acronym for the World
Wide Web, is one of the
important parts of the Internet. It stores a huge collection of
information on computers all over the world. Net surfers can go
to the World Wide Web to get the stored information. The info
that you get can be made to appear on your monitor screen.
3. Web site
(网站)
It’s a collection of Web pages maintained by a company, university,
government agency or individual. For example, RSVP Singapore, a
non-profit organization in Singapore, has a Web site.
4. URL
(网址)
It’s the
acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. It means the
address of a Web site. For example, the URL of RSVP Web site is
http://www.rsvp.org.sg
.

5. Hyperlinks
(超连接链)
Also called
Links, they are highlighted text or images that you can
select (i.e. click) to take you to other Web pages. What happens to
the mouse pointer when it is on the
hyperlink?
Ans. The pointer
(an arrow
光标/鼠标 ) turns
into a hand

Look at the hyperlink bar on the left side of the page.

(or hyperlinks) are there?

Internet Explorer
It’s a
browser belonging to Microsoft. A browser is a programme
that
you use to browse through the info that is on the Web (World
Wide Web).
Another well-known browser is Netscape Navigator.
Net surfing is
actually Net browsing.
7. ISP
(网络服务提供户)
The
acronym stands for Internet Service Provider. To go
surfing
the Net,
you have first to connect your computer to the Net. To
do the connection,
you have to subscribe to a company called ISP
to provide you with such a
service. In Singapore we have SingTel,
Pacific and StarHub providing
Singnet, PacificNet and StarHub
respectively.

1. Let's go from
the Desktop(桌面)page to the Home page(主页)
Double click the Internet
Explorer icon
on
the desktop to
go to the Internet. The first page of the Web site
appears. What is
the name of the Web site that appears?
You call this first page on the Net your home page. You can make
any Web site your home page. To learn how to do it,
please see para
5 below.
2. Let's go from
the Home page to
a popular Web site called Yahoo!
Singapore
(雅虎新加坡).
Place the mouse pointer in the address box and click the box to
highlight the words in the box. Then type in the Address box:
sg.yahoo.com and press Enter on the keyboard.
Yahoo! Singapore’s
front page (also called its home page) appears.

Take a good look at the page. Note that there are
many subject
headings
and sub-headings neatly laid out. These headings
can take you
to other
pages or Web sites. We call these headings
Hyperlink/Links.

3. Let's
find newspapers, local and foreign.
Click Newspapers,
a sub-heading under News & Media. (See Fig.3) The
Newspaper page appears, showing a list of links to
newspapers.
3.1 Click a local newspaper, e.g. The Straits Times. The newspaper's
home page appears. Select one news item and click on it. The
news in full appears.
3.2 Click on a foreign newspaper, e.g. The Washington Post, and read
some news therein.

4. Let's
look for Recipes (食谱).
Under the same Web site directory page of Yahoo!, look for the subject
Society &
Culture. Look for its sub-heading Food,
and click on it.
The Food page appears.
4.1 Let's find a Chicken Rice recipe.
Click : Singapore Listings Only

Cooking "
Recipes>Singaporean
"
Straits Cafe: Recipes "
Poultry Recipes "
Hainanese Chicken Rice. The chicken rice recipe page appears.
4.2 Now
try to find the recipe for Beef Rendang in Straits Cafe.
5. How to make
the Web site/page you like your Home page so that
when you double click the Internet Explorer's
icon on the desktop,
it will be the first page to appear online?
Suppose Yahoo
Singapore is your favourite Web site, and you want
it to be your Home Page.
Here's one way: Go to Yahoo Singapore home
page, and click on Tools
on the menu bar.
(See Fig. 4 & 5).
Click on Internet Options in the
drop-down list. The Internet Options
page appears. Click Use Current,
then
Apply and OK. Yahoo! Singapore is now your Home
page.

6. Let us
find other Web sites.
Yoy'll have no problem finding them if you know their Web site addresses,
i.e. their URLs.
6.1 Let's go
the eCitizen portal, a big Web site
managed the Infocomm
Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). The portal has the
government services on the web.
Let's find NITLP (National IT Literacy Programme):
First go to: www.ecitizen.gov.sg
. Look for the heading:
Employment • Education • Library. Click its sub-heading: Upgrade
My Skills. The Upgrade My Skills page appears. Now roll down
the page to Look for National IT Literacy Programme .
6.2 Now try
to find another Website: SPH's
www.asia1.com.sg .
6.2.1
To find
Computer Times, click the link Computer Times , listed
under News on the left side of Asia1 home page.
6.1.2 To find the weather
condition of Singapore, click Weather, a link
listed under
Lifestyle.
6.1.3 While you are still on
Asia 1,
find : Lianhe Zaobao,
latest Toto results and
latest COE price;
convert : 1000 units of US dollars to Singapore dollars.
6.3
Go to
www.altavista.com . Look for the link
Translate and click
on it.
6.3.1 Translate a few words
or phrases into Chinese.

While you are on the translation
page, try
translating my website
into Chinese. First,
key in my website address
http://www.dbytan.com in the box provided. (See Fig. 7) Then select
the command "English to Chinese - Simplified", and
click Translate.
In a jiffy, the translation is done.

If you know Chinese
you are sure to have a good laugh at the literal
translation!
7. How to look
for a specific topic on the Internet?
Ans:
Use a search engine if you do not know the address of Web site.
Exercise 1. How to find information on The Great Wall of China?
No problem. Use the search engine in Yahoo!. First, get onto Yahoo! In
the search
box, type in the name of
a topic/subject you want to find, e.g.
The
Great Wall of China
and
press Enter. A page appears showing you
a number of Web sites
about the Great
Wall. Choose one and click Enter.
Exercise 2. Go to
search engine Google.com . Type in the name of a topic/subject
you
want to find,
e.g. gingko biloba. A page appears showing you a
number
of Web site links related to gingko biloba. Choose one and click Enter.

Exercise 3. Use a search engine, e.g. Google, Yahoo! or Altavista to find
